There should be at least one reason for a thing to emerge and exist – either based on its functional value, artistic value, personal perception and life experience, or its historicity…. all come from human’s observation and experience of life.Ceramics has treated as fine art only in a few decades. When ceramics was discovered, it has developed along with the pulse of daily human lives, emphasizing its practicality. New ceramics artist as us would like to deny the function quality of their works to make them appear more “ artistic”. As our encounter with ceramics grows, we deeply feel that the functionality is an important integral for ceramics art.The exhibition is themed as “ xi4- wu4” (object in play), which involves the three young ceramic artists, who rethink the value of functionality in ceramics through their playfulness on ceramic objects.Ben Yau has been obsessed with ceramics functionality, and he discovered that even a cup or plate can be very “scientific”. He started to quest for the relation between ceramic object and its functionality; some has its functions transmuted, some are devoid of its function.Rebeka Tam has discovered an intimate relation between objects and body from a normal spoon. Since then, she has started her journey on toeing between the sculptural quality and functionality of spoons.Emile Tsang has founded the truth in old wisdom “Bird of a feather flock together” through his encounter with ceramic bowls. In his search for cultural histories of bowls, he wants to understand the threaded relationship between people and the community.
